Production I.G. Producing CGI Feature Date: 10/6/2008 |
Variety is reporting that anime studio Production I.G. is partnering with Fuji TV to create a computer animated feature film, Hottarake Island: Huruka and the Magic Mirror. The fully computer animated feature is slated to debut in the summer of 2009. According to Variety producer Daisuke Sekiguchi, whose credits include the 2006 Brave Story animated feature, originated the project and created the proprietary software that can turn two-dimensional animated drawings into the 3-D animation while still managing to save some of the life-giving quirky details of traditional hand drawn animation. Shinsuke Sato, who directed the live action martial arts movie Princess Blade(released here in the US by ADV) in 2001 and the romantic drama Sand Clock in 2007, will make his debut as an anime director in what Production I.G. is describing as a kid-targeted family film. Also on tap for Production I.G. is another family oriented fantasy project (as yet untitled), which will be directed by Hiroyuki Okiura, who helmed the very serious adult-oriented alternate history film Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, one of the crown jewels of the modern anime feature film category. |
