Miyazaki Wins Golden Lion Date: 2/9/2005 |
Director Hayao Miyazaki will be awarded the coveted Leone d'Oro (Golden Lion) for career achievement at the 62nd Venice Film Festival on August 9th of this year. The event is the oldest film festival still to take place in the world. Miyazaki is the first Japanese person to take the Golden Lion. In the past his work Spirited Away the won the American Academy Award for best animated film and 2004's Venice International Film Festival saw the Ozerra prize going to Howl's Moving Castle. Miyazaki released the following statement (paraphrase translation): "We wish sincerely to express our gratitude to people in the world where friends have saught to promote my work to the public". |
