Japan's Mainichi newspaper reports 2007 could spell rough times and significant changes in the way Japan's manga publishers go about their business. As free manga magazines spring up such as Comic Gumbo, Yoshimoto Kogyo prepares to enter the market with their unique offerings, and independently published web serials and cell phone manga reading trends continue, the mainstream publishers are losing readers. Weekly Young Jump's readership went from 1.08 million to 1 million, Big Comic Spirits from 410,000 to 390,000, and Morning from 430,000 to 460,000 between 2005-2006 according to the Japan Magazine Publishers Association. |
