Ghibli Wants Foreign Director / Advances Western Animation Date: 1/10/2007 |
Yahoo Japan reports on Studio Ghibli's announcement Monday that it plans to step up its distribution of western animation in Japan to full scale level. After finding success with Outotori (Le roi et l'oiseau / King And Bird) last year, the studio will release Rusian Director Aleksandr Petrov's (The Old Man And The Sea) new film "Haru No Mezame" in Mitaka on March 17th. Producer Toshio Suzuki said "I want to introduce works of old and new". The studio plans to open a new "Ghibli Special Theater" in Tokyo's Shibuya district also. With Outotori, although starting with a single theater 20,000 people eventually saw the movie. In the summer plans are to release French Director Michel Ocelot's latest work "Azure To Asmar". Suzuki adds "It is the age when any film can be see with video now. However, I want you to see a work that dares to be good and original on a big screen." In the future, there is a plan to produce a Ghibli animation work with a foreign director. |
