Chusonji Yutsuko Dies Date: 1/31/2005 |
News of manga artist Chusonji Yutsuko's sudden death was announced as occuring on the morning of January 31st in Japan. The 42 year old was reported to have died of Sigmoid Cancer. Chusonji (real name Kobayashi Yukiko) leaves behind her husband of seven years and 2 children. Her manga works include the golf themed comic Sweet Spot. A private memorial service and funeral will be held for only her close relatives. An update was posted to her website (which was baraged by hits on the 31st and difficult to access) that she passed at 8:45 AM. Recently, she expanded her talent into writing essays and lectures that made politics and the economy themes. Chusonji began drawing at an early age while in school and found inspiration in the Tensai Manga Shoujo TV series and creator Yasuji Tanioka. She was a model in commercials and magazines in junior high school. She learned golf while assisting in housework and graduated Komazawa Law Department. After establishing her manga career, Chusonji won the Rookie Of The Year Award from "Business Jump" and "Cartoon Action" in 1987. In 1989 the serialization for Sweet Spot began in Weekly SPA magazine, it went onto become a best-seller at 200,000 copies sold. She coined the word "Father Gal" and serialized many essays in weekly magazines. She traveled widely visiting the United States (Living in New York City for 2 years), Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. The creator is survived by a daughter (12) and son (15). On May 12th Chusonji visited The Carter Center in Atlanta, Georgia where she met former US President Jimmy Carter. You can read more about her visit at the Japanese Consulate Gneral in Atlanta here. Upon returning Japan, she incorporated elements of her Atlanta visit into a comic that ran in the August 2004 issue of Sotokoto Magazine and was presented to President Carter by Consul General George Hisaeda in September of last year. |
