South Korean SFX Movie Plagiarizes Anime? Date: 9/5/2006 |
After doing quite well in Korean theaters where it achieved blockbuster status, "Guemuru" also known as "The Host" will open in Japan this month. Ahead of the release, the South Korean produced Live Action SFX movie is being called out by Japanese critics on the internet for having blatantly plagiarized some monster designs appearing Japanese animation. Specifically a close similiarity between the Madhouse Patlabor WXIII 2001 anime film's "Haikibutsu 13" and Guemuru are being talked about. Similarities in setting are also brought up. The pressure has been so hard that Japanese importer Happynet Pictures and Korean distributor Chungeorahm have released statements viemately denying any resemblances. Happynet says they would have become aware of the plagiarism of such a popular anime prior to initial release. They had a 4.7 million dollar investment and helped with the scenario and character designs for Guemuru. Kadokawa begins distributing the movie to 250 theaters. in Japan on September 11th. |
