NYCC '06: ADV Films Talks Future Formats Anime distributor reveals their thoughts on VOD, UMD, HD-DVD and Blu-ray.
Date: 2/25/2006
February 25, 2006 - As media companies struggle to keep up with the multitude of formats and platforms for disseminating content, much concern and speculation is put into where to invest. At this morning's ADV Films panel, we got a good deal of insight into where the anime distributor is placing their faith.

Founders of the Anime Network, and Anime Network on Demand, the company made it quite clear that they believe the future of content distribution is in Video on Demand (VOD). Already associated with Cablevision and DirectTV, the company is currently seeking solutions that go beyond the traditional 24/7 network. ADV has moved into the mobile arena with Zoovision, and they are interested at moving into other "third screen" solutions.

What they aren't interested in is placing their properties on UMD, Sony's proprietary format for the PlayStation Portable. "It's not a format that's taken off," commented ADV ADR Director Matt Greenfield.

Speaking of the upcoming HD-DVD/Blu-ray format war, Greenfield said, "From a brick and mortar store's perspective, it's terrible," as box stores will essentially be reduced a third of their former shelf space in order to support all of the formats. He further stated that ADV is "leaning toward whatever comes out [first]."

One thing is certain: the company is already gearing up to produce content in the hi-definition formats. Speaking of the masters the company keeps of their anime properties, Greenfield said, "They're good enough for it, and they're getting better," further remarking that their Japanese partners have been preparing for the HD eventuality for quite awhile.
