Warners Financing Live Action 'Death Note' Movie Based on the Popular Manga
Date: 2/13/2006
According to Fangoria, production has already begun on a live action adaptation of Takeshi Obata's Death Note manga. Warner Bros. is producing the film, which is being shot in Japan, and which stars Tatsuya Fujiwara (Battle Royale). The Goth-tinged Death Note manga is extremely popular in Japan, and is doing very well here in the States where it was recently rated as the #16 "Top Manga Property" by ICv2. The fifth volume in the English language version of the manga (published by Viz) is due out in May.

The Death Note manga is the story of a teenage boy who discovers the notebook of a Shinigami (the Japanese personification of "death"). Anyone whose name is written in this notebook is dead within 40 seconds, and while the book's new teenage owner attempts to use it for good, complications ensue. In the movie the Shinigami will be an 8-foot tall CGI character with blue skin and spiked hair. The live action Death Note movie is scheduled to be released in Japan this June.
