Court Upholds Ban on 'D&D' For Wisconsin Prisoners Date: 1/27/2010 |
Kevin T. Singer, who is serving life in prison for first degree intentional homicide, has lost his battle to overturn a 2004 policy at Wisconsin's Waupun State Prison that bars prisoners from playing the Dungeons & Dragons Role-playing Game. Singer argued that the policy violated his First Amendment rights and demanded that the D&D materials that had been confiscated from his cell be returned. However, on Monday, according to the AP, the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the prison?s policy was ?reasonable.? The authorities at the Waupun State Prison cited concern that playing D&D would promote gang-related activity in banning the game in 2004. We certainly wouldn?t want any rumbles in the exercise yard that would pit the Trolls against Orcs, elves against dwarves, or Halflings against Clerics, now would we? |
