Bandai bundles UMD with DVD Date: 4/21/2005 |
Bandai has decided to start releasing UMD content to the Japanese market, but so far has only bundled UMDs with DVD releases of the same content. The first release will be episodes of the new anim? "Koukyoushihen Eureka Seven" (KES), currently being shown on Japanese networks. A DVD-only edition will be released for US$37, or you can buy the DVD edition with a bundled UMD edition for $49. There is no plan to release the UMD edition on its own, and Bandai stated it will continue this trend at least until all the episodes of KES are released. There has been a lot of uncertainty over UMD movie and content releases so far, and this doubling up seemed like a front-runner of a solution. I think it works because people probably don't want a film that they can only watch on their PSP. If you turn that around, though, and give them the DVD with the added bonus of a PSP-viewable version, the deal looks a lot sweeter. With free software already available for transferring movies to a PSP-friendly format I'm not sure how popular UMD content is going to be, but I do like the idea of special edition releases with both DVD and UMD offerings. Thanks to Gamasutra for the heads-up. |
