Heath Ledger Wins Golden Globe 'Slumdog Millionaire' Triumphs Date: 1/13/2009 |
As expected, Heath Ledger won the Golden Globe award as ?Best Supporting Actor? of 2008 for his performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight. Danny Boyle?s uplifting saga of life in the mean streets of Mumbai, Slumdog Millionaire, was the big winner at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association gala with four major awards including ?Best Picture,? ?Best Director,? ?Best Screenplay? and ?Best Score.? Kate Winslet won both ?Best Supporting Actress,? for her work in The Reader, and ?Best Actress,? for her performance in Revolutionary Road. Mickey Rourke, who is starring in the upcoming Iron Man sequel (see ?Mickey Rourke in Iron Man 2?), won ?Best Actor? for playing the title role in Darren Aronofsky?s The Wrestler. On the TV side, 30 Rock was the big winner with ?Best Comedy,? ?Best Actress? (Tina Fey), and ?Best Actor? (Alec Baldwin) awards. Mad Men won ?Best Drama,? and John Adams took home the ?Best Mini-Series? award along with a ?Best Actress? award for Laura Linney, ?Best Actor? for Paul Giamatti, and a ?Best Supporting Actor in a Mini-Series? award for Tom Wilkinson. Pixar?s Wall-E landed the ?Best Animated Film? award, while the Israeli animated film Waltz with Bashir was named ?Best Foreign Film.? Ledger?s nomination was the only one that Christopher Nolan?s The Dark Knight received (see ?Globes Diss Dark Knight?) as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association?s focus was clearly on arty, low-grossing independent films (Woody Allen?s Vicky Christine Barcelona won ?Best Motion Picture?Musical or Comedy? and Colin Farrell won ?Best Actor? for his work in the brilliant, but modestly budgeted In Bruges). This could clear the way for the Motion Picture Academy, which awards the Oscars, to change its recent course and reward some big budget productions like The Dark Knight, which swept the recent People?s Choice Awards. The Oscars are decided by votes from people within the industry and recent signs indicate that TDK may have a decent shot at some major awards. Christopher Nolan received a Directors Guild of America nomination and also picked up a nod (along with his brother Jonathan and David Goyer) for ?Best Adapted Screenplay? from the Writers Guild of America as well as a nomination for a Producers Guild Award. |
